The Gabriello Illuminati Library is engaged in cultural promotion initiatives, with various projects aimed both at enhancing its structures and documentary heritage, at the implementation of new dedicated services designed for the study and dissemination of Chemistry and Third Mission (TM), i.e. aimed at the community (students and citizenship) to promote and encourage the enhancement, dissemination and transfer of knowledge and know-how.
Universal Civil Service Project #nonsololibri
The Library participates in the #nonsololibri project - promoting and enhancing the libraries of Sapienza. The project will be carried out by two SCU volunteers who will work with us from 25 May 2023 to 24 May 2025.

PRO3 Projects
Sapienza has launched a three-year programme funded by the Ministry of Universities and Research, in accordance with Ministerial Decree No. 773/2024. This decree outlines the general guidelines for the three-year planning of the university system for the period 2024–2026, with the specific objective of developing, growing and recognising human resources. The programme aims to enhance the professional skills of staff, particularly through the PRO3 initiative, which promotes ideas and projects for organisational development, innovation, and improving service quality for users.
The BiCB is participating in several PRO3 proposals.
The Second Life of Books: an initiative for the sustainable reuse of the library's collection.
The 'Stories that Change Shelves' project is a collaboration between the libraries of Ancient Sciences, Modern Literature and Culture, Angelo Monteverdi, and Statistical Sciences. The project aims to promote bibliographic collections that are no longer central to current teaching, but which still hold significant cultural value, in a sustainable manner.
Third Mission Projects
“Third Mission” indicates the set of activities through which universities directly interact with society, alongside traditional teaching and research missions. With the Third Mission, universities are expanding the number and type of interlocutors, opening up to meaningful and constructive ways of interacting and to new opportunities for dialogue and interaction among research, society, schools, institutions and business.
The Illuminati Library is currently engaged TM projects aimed at producing public goods, making its know-how of knowledge and specialist skills available in order to contribute to the social, economic and cultural development of contemporary society:
- Sci All: scienza e libri a portata di mano
Sci All: Science and Books at Your Fingertips is a 'Third Mission' project funded by Sapienza University of Rome and coordinated by the Charles Darwin Library of Biology and Biotechnology, the Gabriello Illuminati Interdepartmental Library of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Guido Castelnuovo Library of Mathematics, and the Library of Earth Sciences. It is also run in collaboration with Biblioteche di Roma.
The project aims to promote scientific culture and disseminate the research carried out by the departments of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, highlighting its multidisciplinary nature and connection to fundamental issues relating to life, the local area, and the 2030 Agenda. The ultimate goal is to strengthen public confidence in science.
The project focuses on creating an active network between the scientific community and so-called 'non-specialists' in Rome, a complex area. Designed for different user groups, the interdisciplinary events will take various forms, such as science cafés and workshops, and will be held in municipal libraries.
- fREAD Yourself. Women in Shelters and the Imapct of Libraries
Fread Yourself was launched as a follow-up to the Liberiamoci project, thanks to funding from the annual Europe Challenge programme. This brings together teams of libraries and communities from across Europe to tackle social isolation, inequality, disinformation, the climate crisis and other local challenges. Together, they develop, share and implement creative solutions with the support of the European Cultural Foundation and its partners.
The project involves running educational and cultural activities with and for women in shelters for victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation and labour exploitation, which are run by Differenza Donna. The aim is to combat violence and promote gender equality.
- Lib(e)riamoci
Lib(e)riamoci was born from the collaboration between the Sapienza Libraries and the Differenza Donna Association and pursues a twofold objective: to promote reflection on the issue of gender-based violence and to support women who are victims of violence in their path to regaining their independence.
The librarians who contribute to the project work with women in shelters, making available skills and professionalism to carry out information literacy initiatives, cultural and recreational activities, the latter in favor of their daughters and sons, unaware victims of the same violence.
- Sapienza libre tutt3
‘Sapienza libera tutt*’ is a Third Mission project run by the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and aimed at the Italian juvenile prison system.
Led by the Philosophy Library, it involves the Central Library of the Faculty of Architecture, the library of the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies, the library of the Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, and the Central Library of the G. Boaga Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering. Staff from the Illuminati Library are also involved.
The project aims to empower prisoners by organising activities that allow them to express themselves through writing and reading aloud, helping them to overcome the limitations imposed by their circumstances. The focus is on active participation in organising the Sapienza 'Spazio alle parole' literary prize.
Workshop activities are run in juvenile detention centres in Rome (Casal del Marmo), Turin, Treviso, Potenza, Bari, Caltanissetta and Acireale by lecturers, technical and library staff, and Sapienza students who have received specialised training.
The project is currently underway and will soon be extended to include a network of Italian universities.

- BibUP, your Library with Sapienza
The project, in collaboration with the Libraries of Environmental Biology, Biology and Biotechnology C. Darwin, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Philosophy, Civil and Industrial Engineering, DIAEE and Centrale Boaga, creates a bridge between university and school libraries, through a path aimed at developing information skills, promoting reading, organizing events and communicating about the library that students will be able to do to enhance their school library.
